9D8N Snorkelling Cruise, Moyo Island

Satonda is a small uninhabited volcanic Island off the northern coast of Sumbawa separated by a narrow straight. The center of the island holds a mysterious salt water lake with clear water that ranges from 15 to about 70 meters in depth. Around the lake you can see where locals have hung rocks from the trees in hopes of having their dreams come true.

Satonda Island is a small island located off the northern tip of Sumbawa, in the middle of the Lesser Sunda Islands chain, with Lombok to the west, Flores to the east, and Sumba further to the southeast. It is in the province of West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Satonda is a volcanic island featuring an idyllic crater lake with fresh water to swim in just several hundred metres from the beach. The seas surrounding the island are rich with soft and hard corals, colorful tropical fishes, ideal for snorkeling and swimming.

There are a couple of nice treks around the island where you can see some beautiful panoramic views of the lake and nearby islands. In the overgrown jungle surrounding the island you will find the home of thousands of Fruit Bats, due to their large size they are also known as flying foxes. During the day you can see and hear the bats hanging from the trees at sunset they leave the jungle to find food. This is an incredible site as the sky darkens with thousands of bats making their way to dinner. Along the island you can find great diving with rare species of pigmy seahorses, giant frogfish and some beautiful reefs.

Moyo and Satonda – Magical Islands and more 9 days/8 nights

Departure: Bali pm Return: Bali pm

If you’re looking for spectacular islands, deserted beaches and adventures that will last a lifetime then this is the cruise for you. Departing and returning to Bali allows you to combine this cruise with your other Indonesian travel adventures. Moyo and Satonda islands will captivate you and guarantee to fill up your cameras memory cards!

This is an example itinerary for one of our Moyo and Satonda trips

Day 01

We plan a leisurely departure late morning and will cruise up the north-east coast of Bali to the small village of Tulamben the site of the wreck of the USS Liberty, a US Army transport ship torpedoed in 1942. We will anchor here for the night and enjoy our first night under the stars.

Day 02

There will be adequate time to explore the wreck and then we will head off across the straits of Lombok. This stretch of water between Bali and Lombok marks a very important ecological boundary, first described by Sir Alfred Russel Wallace, the British naturalist. He noticed that the flora and fauna of the islands to the west are home to Asiatic animal and plant species, whereas the islands to the east of that “line” have a greater similarity to species found in Australia. We will anchor at one of the Gili islands with plenty of time to explore the pristine environment, swim and relax.

Day 03

We will sail all day today on our way to Moyo islands. Stopping to swim and explore as we wish we aim to arrive at Moyo for an afternoon anchorage.

Day 04

Today we relax and explore Moyo, a large island with virtually no roads. The majority of the island is a National Park. Our mooring will be close to a small village and once on shore we can walk down shaded tracks passing small farms into the forest. This track ends at a clear river pool fed by a large waterfall. There will be plenty of time to swim and relax in this wonderful tropical paradise. After lunch we will cruise to Angel reef, an incredible coral garden which will treat you with crystal clear water and numerous fish species. A wall offers the more adventurous a drift snorkel before we move down the coast to experience the sunset display as thousands of bats leave their caves for their nightly forage.

Day 05

After breakfast we continue east towards Pulau Satonda. Satonda is a mystical island with a sunken volcano marine lake at its centre. We will have plenty of time to explore this island, our mooring has been chosen to maximise the opportunity to swim, snorkel and explore.

You can swim in the marine lake, and the more adventurous can walk around the edge of the volcano. We will stay here overnight.

Day 06

Unfortunately today is when we head back west, but we will find time for an early morning drift snorkel with thousands of sea eels who sway in the white sand looking like sea grass moving in the current. It is a leisurely 7 hour cruise which will give you plenty of time to relax and enjoy being at sea in a traditional Phinisi schooner. Early evening we plan to arrive at Pulau Keremat where we will moor for the night.

Day 07

They say the only inhabitant is a cat or is it the lone fisherman who makes this lovely island his home? Regardless this is a great place to rest and relax. The beaches are great as is the exquisite coral gardens where you will often see turtles and the occasional black tipped reef shark. After a beach BBQ dinner we will sail west towards the Gilis in Lombok.

Day 08

Depending on conditions we will base ourselves around Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno. Full of amazing sites for snorkling or for those of you craving civilisation you can get your shopping or cocktail fix at Gili Trawangan. We will take our time enjoying the coral reefs and pristine beaches at our leisure. By now you will have fully unwound and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere these islands have to offer.

Day 09

A morning departure will see us pass the islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida on our way back to Bali. We are in no hurry and will plan to get you back mid to late afternoon, stopping on our way to swim and enjoy the scenery.
